ISSUE: Environment
Last week, during which Earth Day occurred, was largely transformed into Earth Week in terms of publicity. Some commentators have noted the increased commercialism and public relations connections of business to the “Green” movement may increase cynicism rather than help solve problems. Other commentators have bemoaned the fact that the kind of media coverage most needed, such as making social issues like the environment front and center in the presidential campaign and political coverage, rather than focus on horserace issues, is the predominant impediment to progress. Further, credible experts involved in the climate change issue have indicated that it continues to be discovered that things are worse than we thought, and that while personal actions to reduce our energy use and carbon footprint are important, with population on the planet continuing toward historic highs, even if the growth was somehow reduced quickly, its too late to avoid a cataclysm without massive intervention of technologies to neutralize climate change and create carbon neutral sustainable energy without hurting other social needs, known and to be discovered, moved forward by government mandates, support and private sector efforts motivated by both social concern and the profit motive.
Do you believe that even if the vast majority of the people of the planet changed personal consumption at this stage to carbon neutral behavior, that the problem has reached a level of such critical mass, that substantial focus on appropriate sustainable technologies will be a necessary and critical part of the solutions to issues related to climate change?
