Holiday spending in the US alone is approximately half a trillion dollars and many additional billions worldwide. This is out of approximately a 14 trillion dollar annual US Gross Domestic Product and approximately 50 trillion worldwide. If Holiday spending was cut by 10%, while it might contribute to a possible a minimal slowdown in the world economy, would still amount to a fraction of global spending (far less than 1% of total annual US spending alone), while if was reinvested in poor economies, could expand the world economy in a more sustainable manner and save millions of lives every year. Over three billion people, half the people on the planet, live on less than three dollars a day, and die prematurely by the millions from lack of food and health care, while also contributing to higher birth rates to offset infant and child death rates, further straining an environment in crisis and contributing to global insecurity, violence and war. Are you willing to reduce ten percent of what you spend specifically on Holiday shopping and contribute this (in addition to whatever you might already contribute, which is already figured into to annual spending on hunger, poverty and related issues) to help end hunger and poverty, decrease environmental devastation and increase global security, while communicating with your political representatives, those seeking public office, and those in positions of responsibility on such matters, that your support depends upon requiring such funds, if through taxes for such specific purposes, or in contributions to UN programs, non-governmental programs and charities that cater to aid for such purposes, to be utilized on sustainable programs which reach those in need and have been proven to work?
